A company's security culture is the foundation for a successful security program.
Security programs consist of Art and Science. The Science includes the security policies and procedures, security technology, staffing, enterprise risk management, accounting, budgeting, program design, etc. The Art of a leading security program is based on the human aspects and all their many complexities and challenges - and are what determine the level of the security program's sustained success.
I offer 43+ years of pure corporate security experience working for major multi-national corporations including General Motors, Levi Strauss & Co., Kimberly-Clark and Cardinal Health. My education of business and security cultures started 42+ years ago as a mid-night shift proprietary security officer in a General Motors distribution facility then on to positions of increasing responsibility up to Chief Security Officer.
I also owned a consulting firm for 10 years and supported over 100 Fortune® 500 companies - and learned from all 100 security cultures. While with Kimberly-Clark Corporation, security director for Latin America Operations, the company was ranked #1 of 1,900 companies from 2009-2011 by the Great Place to Work Institute®. And we held 1st or 2nd place in sales in over 20 countries. My innovative security strategies were recognized by senior leadership as critical contributions in those years of #1 rankings.
I learned real-world business acumen and leadership from company supervisors, managers, directors, VPs, SVPs, Presidents and CEOs. They also taught me the Art of relationships and trust as did my direct managers, mentors, professors, and colleagues. My father instilled my work ethic and my mother instilled empathy, compassion and love.
